Make sure to select the county where you will be married, not just where you currently live.

There are many rules and regulations when applying for a marriage license in Michigan. Here are a few tips to keep in mind! If both you and your fiance are out-of-state residents, not only does it cost you more (about $10 extra) but you also have to get married in the county that you get your marriage license in. In-state residents simply have to make sure they get their marriage license in a county where one of them is a legal resident. After applying, they can choose to get married anywhere in Michigan. Most counties only need one of you to appear at the office to apply for a marriage license, just make sure that person is a county resident! Also, be careful when timing out when to apply for a marriage license in Michigan. There is a 3 day waiting period and the marriage license is only valid for 30-33 days! Some counties, like Alpena County, have an option to get your marriage license “rushed” but there is a $40 fee.
