How To Apply:

If you are planning to marry in North Carolina you must obtain a marriage license from the Register of Deeds office. The marriage license may be used immediately after it has been issued. You may marry in any county in the State of North Carolina, but the marriage license must be returned to the county of issuance within 10 days after the ceremony. The cost of the marriage license is $60.00 and is valid for 60 days. If you would like a certified copy mailed to you after you are married, that is an additional $10.00 fee. Marriage licenses are issued between 8:00 A.M. and 4:30 P.M., Monday thru Friday. Our office only accepts cash for marriage licenses. If the marriage license is not used it must be returned to our office. There will be no refund for returned licenses. A premarital physical is not required.

Name Change:
Filing for a marriage license in the state of North Carolina does not cause your or your spouse’s last name to automatically change. Married name change services are available to guide you through the married name change process if you opt to change your name.
