How To Apply:
Both applicants are required to appear in person at the Statesville or Mooresville Register of Deeds office to receive a marriage license. The process usually takes less than 30 minutes. Marriage licenses are issued between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. The state fee for a marriage license is $60. You may prepay an additional $10 to receive a marriage certificate via mail after returning the license after your ceremony. Brides will need a marriage certificate to change their last name. Only cash, debit/credit cards or money order are accepted. The premarital physical is no longer required.

Filing for a marriage license in the state of North Carolina does not cause your or your spouse’s last name to automatically change. Married name change services are available to guide you through the married name change process if you opt to change your name.
