Ways to Save – Marriage license fees in West Virginia are typically $56. Less than thrilled about that price? Good news! If you bring proof of premarital counselling you will receive a $20 discount from the County Clerk’s Office. Consider it an early wedding gift.
Twice As Nice – When filing for your West Virginia marriage license, both engaged individuals must apply in-person. Marriage licenses are valid for 60 days after they are issued so be sure to coordinate a time and date when both of you are off of work to file together less than 60 days prior to your wedding. *Please note that the County Clerk’s office needs 30 minutes to process your application, so arrive at least 30 minutes before the office closes to ensure that you receive your marriage license.
What to Bring (Besides the Ring) – West Virginia is serious about the amount of identification necessary to procure a marriage license. Both of you will need to bring a certified birth certificate (it will have a stamp or seal on it,) government-issued photo ID (such as a driver’s license or US passport,), and your Social Security card. *If you went through premarital counselling, don’t forget to bring that certificate to receive your discount!
Now that you have the inside scoop, filing your marriage license in West Virginia will be a breeze! We wish you a wonderful wedding day and happily ever after!
